Conduit wins Breeders' Cup Turf
25 Oct 2008
CONDUIT (by Dalakhani ex Well Head) wins the 2008 Emirates Breeders' Cup Turf (Gr1) at Santa Anita, California by 1 1/2 lengths. Ryan Moore gave him a perfect ride, coming late and wide to sweep past Eagle Mountain and win Ballymacoll's third Breeders' Cup victory.
It had been intended for Conduit to retire for the season after his victory in the St Leger, but Sir Michael Stoute felt he came out of the race so well that the Breeders' Cup was worth a go. There was a question mark over whether he would find the step back in trip from the 1m6f of the St Leger to 1m4f of the turf too stiff. Having won over 10f and 12f already this year, the trainer felt this would not be a problem.
Santa Anita has been a lucky track for Ballymacoll, with Islington taking victory in Filly & Mare Turf there back in 2003. Ballymacoll's other Breeders' Cup success came in 1996 when Pilsudski won the Turf in Woodbine. All of these winners were trained by Sir Michael Stoute, who along with this trio trained Kalanisi for the Aga Khan to win the Breeders' Cup Turf in 2000.
This victory copper fastens an incredible 2008 for Ballymacoll on the race track so far:
- Average of 25% wins to runs (64 runs, 16 wins)
- 67% of runners finishing in first 4 places
- Classic win
- Breeders' Cup win
- One Group 2 win
- Two Group 3 wins
- Ten Individual winners
- Two Individual 2yo winners
